5 Ways to Cut Your Risk of Prostate Cancer

Dr. Wayne Neal

Many experts say all men will develop prostate disease if they live long enough. What can you do to prevent this from happening to you? Here are 5 things researchers have found to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

First, eat more garlic. A study published in the November 2002 issue of Journal of National Cancer Institute found that a diet rich in garlic, onions, shallots, leeks, and scallions may cut the risk of prostate cancer. Those who ate 2 grams of garlic per day decreased their risk of prostate cancer by more than 50%.

Second, take cod liver oil or fish oils. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and help prevent prostate cancer according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition July 2004 issue. Cod liver oil contains vitamin D which is also helpful in preventing prostate cancer.

Third, get enough zinc in your diet. Zinc nourishes the prostate gland and improves immune function. Pumpkin seeds are a great source of zinc. If you take zinc supplements, take one containing copper because zinc competes with copper for absorption, according to Dr. John Lee, M.D.

Fourth, remember your vitamin E. The risk of prostate cancer was reduced by 50% in men who took vitamin E. A study in the March 2005, Journal of the National Cancer Institute found men with high blood levels of alpha- and gamma-tocopherol (major components in vitamin E) had half the risk of getting prostate cancer.

Fifth, try Saw Palmetto berry extract. According to The Analyst, this herb has been tested in clinical trials and shown to improve the signs and symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

These five suggestions work best when added to a balanced lifestyle of:

·        Eating whole foods rather than processed foods.

·        Drinking pure water.

·        Relieving stress through a reasonable workout schedule.

·        Getting periodic chiropractic check-ups.

·        Spending time with your family and friends.

·        Staying connected with God in prayer.
