What Diet is Right for You?

Dr. Wayne Neal

How do you determine which diet is right for you?  You can choose from any number of books at the bookstore. There is the vegetarian diet, Maker's diet, blood-type diet, food-combining diet, low-carb diet, low-fat diet, and various no-taste diets.  I personally have tried all of these at different times.  I would tell others about the particular diet I was on at the time.  Some patients responded well, while others had negative results.

You Are Unique

Each patient at the Humber Parkerson Clinic gets a different adjustment.  The biomechanics of your spine are different from everyone else.  The same is true of your biochemistry.  One size does not fit all. Your biochemistry affects your diet.  The right food for others may not be right food for you.

The Nutrition Solution by Dr. Harold Kristal is a fascinating book that opened my eyes as to why people respond differently to certain foods.  According to Dr. Kristal, each person has a personalized metabolism or metabolic type. That is to say the way each person digests food is unique.

Food is the fuel for the body.  Some are able to easily convert food to energy, but others have problems in this process.  According to Dr. Kristal, the way you convert food determines the type foods you need to eat.

Metabolic Type

Some metabolic types digest carbohydrates too fast, causing the blood sugar to spike too quickly and then fall.  When I eat carbohydrates, I run out of fuel mid-morning and late afternoon. This is like starting a campfire with newspapers or sticks.  They are easy to light and burn fast, but do not last long.  I use proteins to balance my metabolism.  Proteins are like the logs that burn slower and take a long time to burnout.

Other types have a tough time digesting proteins and do better on a mostly vegetarian diet.  I was a vegetarian at one point in my life, but did not do well.  My friends did so well on the vegetarian diet, but I could not figure out why I was getting worse rather than better.  Now I understand it was because of my metabolic type.

The Right Diet

The Nutrition Solution includes a test used to determine individual metabolic type.  It also includes a list of foods for each type.  It is interesting to note my adjustments hold better when I eat the correct foods.  A balanced biochemistry helps the rest of the body stay balanced.

So what diet is right for you?  Before trying various diets by trial and error to find which one works, determine your metabolic type. Always remember, one size does not fit all, whether it's clothes, adjustments, or diets!
