3 Steps to Beating Pesticides

Dr. Wayne Neal

Are you concerned about free radicals?  They can damage your DNA and result in diseases like cancer and heart disease.  Many of today's foods are covered in pesticides that produce free radicals in the body.  What can you do to protect yourself and your family?

Step 1: Avoiding Pesticides

The first step is to avoid foods that contain the most pesticides.  Dr. Michael Murphy, author of Healing Foods, suggests avoiding the dirty dozen.  The Naughty List of fruits and vegetables are those that have the most pesticides.  These foods are best eaten organically.  They are more expensive, but they are worth it in the long run.  Some fruits and vegetables have very little pesticides on them and are OK to eat.  The Nice List are those that contain the least amount of pesticides.

2.   Strawberries

3.   Apples

4.   Spinach

5.   Nectarines

6.   Celery

7.   Pears

8.   Cherries

9.   Potatoes

10. Sweet bell peppers

11. Raspberries

12. Imported grapes

The Nice List

Step 2: Removing Pesticides

The second step to reducing your exposure to free radicals is to remove the pesticides from your food.  Agricultural pesticides do not wash off with just water.  If they did, the farmers would have to apply them after every rain.  For this reason it is important to wash the foods with soap and water according to Dr. Andrew Saul, PhD.

Certain foods like apples and cucumbers are waxed as well.  Most detergents will not dissolve waxes.  You can buy special solutions to remove the wax, or simply use a peeler.  It is effective and inexpensive.

Step 3: Fight Free Radicals

The third step is to counteract the negative effects of pesticides.  Antioxidants are natural substances that protect the body from free radicals.  Vitamins A, C, and E, CoQ10, lipoic acid, and glutathione are a few of the antioxidants in the body.  For more information, read my article on antioxidants in the March 2006 issue of The Highest Level.  Another way to counter the ill effects of pesticides is to detoxify.  Dr. Parkerson explains this in the October 2007 issue of the Highest Level.
