Natural Stress Relief

Dr. Wayne Neal

Stress getting to you?  It is the number one reason patients come out of adjustment.  What can you do?  Here are three easy and natural ways to cope with the stress of life without a prescription.

Removing the Knots

The first way to tell you’re stressed is by feeling your shoulders.  Are they tied in knots?  The shoulders, or trapezius muscles attach to the neck, shoulder blades, and mid back.

Tension causes the muscles to contract.   Chronic contractions of the muscles cause a build up of lactic acid. This forms a trigger point and results in muscle spasms.  This can pull on the bones in the neck and pull you out of adjustment.  What can you do to prevent this?

First, find the tender point on the muscle using your opposite hand.  It is usually where the red dot is in the first picture.  Gently apply pressure and slowly increase the intensity.  Though it is sore, you will feel the muscle tension slowly release.   Then, repeat on the opposite side.  Traffic, sitting at the computer, and standing in line are all perfect times to try this simple, but powerful technique.

Warming Up and Chilling Out

Vitamin B-3 has an unusual way of helping you relax.  It causes a vasodilatation response or “flush” when you take it.  A warm tingling sensation starts at the head and slowly goes down the body as the skin turns bright red.   It warms you up and at the same time causes a calming sense of relaxation.  The “flush” lasts from a few minutes to about an hour.

According to Dr. Abram Hoffer, MD vitamin B-3 has the ability to increase the production of serotonin, which is commonly deficient among people suffering from anxiety.  Serotonin is the feel good chemical in the brain. B-3 also helps the body break down lactic acid which has been linked to anxiety and panic attacks.

Asking For Help From Above

A new study that was conducted by Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, showed that those who pray had lower blood pressure than their counterparts who didn't.  Experiments also showed that prayer positively affected heart attacks, headaches, and anxiety.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

This short prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr is uttered by millions each day to deal with the stress of life.  Prayer is powerful in the battle of stress.  Another place I turn to is the book of Psalms.  King David was a man who knew about stress, so you can relate to the Psalms he wrote.

Final Word

These have worked wonders in my life.  I hope they help you to deal with the stresses of life. Of course, make sure you are in adjustment because a spinal misalignment can really get on your nerves!
