My Secret Reason for
Becoming a Chiropractor
Dr. Wayne Neal
Do you want
to know a secret? The real reason I
became a chiropractor was an accident. I quite literally fell into it! When I was a toddler, I climbed up on a couch
and fell head first on the floor. Though no bones were broken, the bones in my
neck were misaligned. The shoulders and head were always tilted in my pictures
after the fall.
I remember being the “sick kid” in class and missing
a couple of weeks of school every year.
Only later did I discover that when the neck is out of adjustment, it
causes a chain reaction. The
misalignment distorts the messages to and from the brain. This causes the muscles to spasm and the
lymph glands cannot drain properly. As a
result, I was always sick with colds. I
took various medications and had my tonsils taken out, but still I was sick
more than others in my class.
Once, while
in elementary school, I hurt myself lifting something. The next morning I woke up with torticollis,
a severe “crick” in the neck. I could
not straighten my neck out. I went to a
traditional chiropractor to get my neck adjusted. I did not like getting my neck cracked, but
the torticollis was better. I would have
to get an adjustment from time to time when I had migraine headaches,
backaches, or neck pain.
I did well
until I was in high school when I hurt my back so badly that I was unable to
sit all day at school. By half way
through the day, I would have to stand in the back of the class because of the
sciatic pain. I went to an orthopedic
doctor for an evaluation with blood work and other tests to see what was
wrong. They couldn’t find the cause for
my pain, so they gave me medication to take.
It dulled the symptoms, but did not take away the pain. Chiropractic was the only thing that gave me
relief.
In college,
I was in the pre-med program studying to be an optometrist. During the summer break, I got a job at a chiropractor’s
office and fell in love with chiropractic.
That’s when I decided I wanted to be a chiropractor. I changed my major
and made plans to attend chiropractic school.
When I
started the chiropractic program, the migraine headaches got so bad that I was
ready to quit. The pain hurt so much
that I could not take it. Out of
desperation, I talked to one of my professors, Dr. John D. Grostic. He invited me to the research department and
took x-rays of my neck, analyzed them, and adjusted me. I had been to many other chiropractors
before, but this was a new experience.
The adjustment was gentle and did not involve any twisting or
popping. The headaches and the back pain
went away. In fact, it worked so well
that I became a Grostic Chiropractor.
The secret
is out! This is the reason why I became a chiropractor.
